Fascia and soffit
Fascia boards sit directly behind the gutter and take the brunt of any water that overflows or backs up, so soft or rotten fascia is often the first sign of a gutter problem that has been going on longer than anyone noticed. Soffit panels, the underside of the roof overhang, provide the intake ventilation the attic needs, and damaged or blocked soffit is a common reason an otherwise well-built roof still develops condensation problems.
We replace rotten sections in kind, usually wrapping wood fascia in aluminium once it is repaired so the same water exposure does not cause the same problem again in a few years.
Trim and window and door surrounds
Wood trim around windows and doors is where paint failure and rot tend to show up first, since these are the joints where water can sit against end grain. We probe suspect trim with an awl before quoting anything, because trim that looks fine on the surface can be soft an inch underneath, and painting over soft wood only hides the problem for one more season.
Where a full trim replacement is not needed, we cut out and splice in matching material rather than replacing an entire run, which keeps the cost proportional to the actual damage.
Small envelope repairs before winter
Before the first hard freeze, gaps around vents, pipe penetrations and utility lines are worth sealing properly, since a gap that lets in a draft in October usually lets in ice and moisture by January in a Centre County winter. We check these details on any exterior visit even when they were not the reason for the call, and flag anything that is worth fixing while a ladder is already up rather than scheduling a separate trip.
When a small repair points to something bigger
Fascia rot at multiple points around the house, rather than one isolated spot, usually means the gutters have been overflowing for longer than a season, and treating each rotten section individually without addressing the gutter itself just means doing the same repair again in a couple of years. We say so plainly when a pattern like that shows up, rather than quoting each spot as its own unrelated job.
